Uninstalling TransSECS and MIStudio
Everything the TransSECS or MIStudio installer installs is in the installation folder, by default a folder under C:\Users\Public\ErgoTech on Windows or ~/ErgoTech on Linux, unless you chose another during installation. There is no uninstall program: to remove the software, delete that folder. Work through the steps below first.
The same instructions are in uninstall-readme.txt in the installation folder. On Windows, How to Uninstall in the ErgoTech Start menu folder opens it.
1. Keep what you need
Everything inside the installation folder is deleted with it. Copy out anything you want to keep first, in particular:
- your projects, if you saved them under the installation folder (for example in the
Projectsfolder); - deployments you built under the installation folder and want to keep;
- licence files (
*.lic). Keep them in a safe location for future testing.
Deployments and projects you have already copied somewhere else are not affected.
2. Stop everything that runs from the installation folder
Close TransSECS, MIStudio and the tools (SECS Tester, simulators), and stop every deployment started from the installation folder. Windows will not delete a file that a running program has open.
3. Remove any services and automatic starts you set up
If you set up a program or deployment from the installation folder to run as a Windows service, remove the service before you delete the folder. Otherwise Windows keeps a service that points at a program that no longer exists.
A service set up with WinSW: open a Command Prompt as Administrator in the folder that holds the service's .exe and run:
<name>.exe stop <name>.exe uninstall
Any other service: in Services (services.msc), open the service's Properties and note its “Service name” (not the display name). Then, in a Command Prompt as Administrator:
sc stop "<service name>" sc delete "<service name>"
A shortcut in the Startup folder: delete it. Open the folder with Windows key + R and shell:startup (or shell:common startup for all users).
On Linux, if you set up a systemd service for a deployment, disable it and delete its unit file:
sudo systemctl disable --now <name>.service sudo rm /etc/systemd/system/<name>.service sudo systemctl daemon-reload
See Starting TransSECS deployments automatically on Windows for how these are set up.
4. Delete the installation folder
Delete the installation folder and everything in it.
5. Remove the shortcuts (Windows)
On Windows the installer also made shortcuts outside the installation folder. Delete:
- the desktop shortcuts it made. Depending on the product, these are some of: MIStudio, TransSECS Builder, TransSECS Devices Builder, TransSECS Tester, ErgoTech SECS Tester, TransSECS OPC, TransSECS OPCUA, TransSECS Test, Programmatic TransSECS, OPC Gateway;
- the ErgoTech folder in the Start menu. It is in one of the two folders below, depending on whether the shortcuts were made for all users or only for you (paste the line into the Explorer address bar).
%ProgramData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\ErgoTech %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\ErgoTech
If another ErgoTech installation is still on this computer, its shortcuts share the same names and the same ErgoTech folder. Delete only the shortcuts that point into the folder you removed (right-click, Properties, Target).
On Linux the installer makes no shortcuts or menu entries.
6. The "MIStudio" entry left by earlier versions (Windows)
Earlier versions added an entry called “MIStudio” to Settings > Apps (Add or Remove Programs). Current versions do not. Once the installation folder is gone, that entry's Uninstall button does nothing useful. To remove the entry, run in a Command Prompt as Administrator:
reg delete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\MIStudio" /f
Every ErgoTech installation on the computer shares this one entry, so it is safe to delete whenever you like: no current installation uses it.
Java
A Java installed separately on this computer, such as the JDK chosen during installation on Linux, is not part of the installation and is not removed. On Windows, the jre folder inside the installation folder is removed with it; deployments you copied a jre folder into keep their copy.
